Purchase and Maintenance of a Boat Trailer

Simple Boat Trailer Unless you happen to be fortunate enough to have a property on a lake shore or live near a port, you're probably going to need a trailer to transport your boat. Like any other piece of equipment, boat trailers are manufactured in a number of different ways. Additionally, trailers may have extra features that can increase comfort or save time when loading or unloading your boat.

With that in mind, it's important to consider a number of factors when you're in the market for a boat trailer. Some of those factors include purchasing the right size boat trailer and providing the proper maintenance.

Purchasing the Right Size Trailer

One of the primary considerations when looking to purchase a boat trailer is to ensure that you obtain the right sized trailer. In order to do this there are a number of factors.

First off, you'll want to make sure you purchase a trailer that can actually fit your boat. Obviously major factor that determines the size of boat trailer required is the length of the boat itself although you shouldn't forget about width either. Additionally, it's worth noting what size of trailer your boat's manufacturer recommends.

A second consideration to be made is the material used to construct the trailer. Generally, trailers are made either from steel or aluminum. The choice of whether the boat owner uses steel or aluminum again goes back to the size of the boat.

An often accepted rule of thumb is that any water craft that is less than 23 feet in length can fit firmly and safely on to trailer made of aluminum. Any sized craft greater than 23 feet should consider the use of a steel constructed boat trailer. This is simply because this sized water craft is heavier and generally needs the support of steel.

Maintenance Schedule

Proper maintenance is very important to maintain the security and usability of your trailer but also to extend it's lifetime. I advice to set up a regular maintenance plan and follow it. This strategy is critical in as your boat trailer will be either in or around water constantly. Even though boat trailers are made for exactly this, the continuous exposure to water could eventually take its toll on the trailer. It is therefore important to have boat trailer parts on-hand if you're comfortable enough doing the work yourself or know of a reputable mechanic or dealership who can do the maintenance work for you if needed.

My number one tip with regards to trailer boat maintenance - and this should be done on a consistent basis - is the repacking of the wheel bearings. Much like oil service, it is recommended this procedure is done every 3,000 miles or 5,000 km of boat trailer mileage. With that said, it's best to keep a log in your car of the miles driven with your trailer both loaded and empty (if any).
