Choosing Boat Accessories and Parts for Emergency Use

There are certain boat parts and accessories you'll want to have around to make sure your boat, no matter what size or type, lasts long enough to make it worth your investment. Other parts you'll simply want to have around in case your boat breaks down or to protect your boat and passengers from bad weather. One such item serves a dual purpose: removable convertible tops. These are often seen on boats to protect its passengers from sunburn, but when installing the optional side curtains, they can provide some decent protection from heavy rains or firm winds as well.

Boat accessories or parts such as personal flotation devices, a first aid kit, or even a spare tank of gas should never be left at the dock. There is nothing worse - and embarrassing - when boating to have the engine sputter and come to a complete halt only to realize you've ran out of gas (been there too, in my younger days). This can be less devastating provided another of the boat parts and accessories, an oar, is packed inside your boat to help get you back to shore, so start rowing matey :D

Even the smallest crafts have many boat parts and accessories available, including sail mending kits, spare propellers, and spare oars to keep you going if you accidentally run into the rocky bottom. Many of the available boat parts and accessories can easily fit into the boat and taken out on every trip, just in case the party runs into some unexpected bad weather or the ship breaks down.

Plan for the Worst

Even with a brand new boat, Murphy's law is never far away. Unexpected problems or let's say "technical difficulties" never occur when you're a few feet from shore but always when you're miles out. Unfortunately, keeping all of the parts and accessories that could possibly break is not only unpractical but would also result in there not being enough space left over for any passengers. Therefore, it's recommended to only carry the necessary boat parts and accessories to help you:
- Stay afloat (whether you're on your boat or off of it)
- Visible (spare light bulbs, big flashlight, flares)
- Make it back to shore (oar, emergency tank of gas)
And in that order too.

For example, if you have a rubber raft, a repair kit that provides underwater sealing should be the first inflatable boat accessories you buy after purchasing the boat. Even the small inflatables should be treated with care because when you're out on the lake, they're the only thing that separates you from the water on which you are. No matter the size of the boat, choose first from the list of boat parts and accessories that provide safety before looking into convenience or "luxury" accessories.
