Guidelines and Tips to Buying a Boat

Much like buying a car or a house, buying a boat is not a quick spur of the moment purchase. If you're truly interested and are financially ready to become a boat owner, there's a process that you're going to have to go through. This process will ensure that you come out of it with the best possible results and become the proud owner of a boat that's not only going to meet your needs but your budget as well.

What Type of Boat do You Want?

First off you'll want to make sure your future boat will be able to properly accommodate you, the people that will be coming with you (just your partner or your whole family?), and it should also accommodate what you want to be able to do while on your boat.
You could get a boat to simply float around in the local lake, or a boat to go on fishing trips with out in the ocean. Some people even buy boats to cruise around the Caribbean or cross the world's oceans!
Figure out what you're going to do with and on your boat so you can get a vessel that meets all your needs.

Should You Buy Used or New?

Once you figure out what kind of boat you're in the market for, it's time to figure out if you're going to buy new or used. Obviously, a new vessel means you're the first owner and the boat is in excellent condition so there shouldn't be much to worry about in terms of maintenance.
Used boats are obviously much cheaper than their new counter-parts, but could turn expensive with maintenance that's around the corner without you knowing about it.

Where to Shop

Probably the way to get started on your road to boat-ownership is a visit to a boat show. These shows are the mecca for current and aspiring boat owners while side-by-side comparisons allow you to evaluate several competing models at a single location.

You'll be able to find the perfect boat for you and/or your family at a price that meets your budget as long as you use common sense, take your time, and don't be afraid to ask questions or do extensive research.
There are plenty of fantastic options out there and so you unquestionably won't be lacking in terms of selection. I can't stress this enough, you just need to have patience and make sure you do your research first so that you can come out of it all with the best results without getting ripped off or come across any surprises after your purchase. Boats are large purchases so you want to make sure you get it right the first time.
One final tip that's unfortunately not available to everyone: If you have a family member, friend, colleague or other relative that owns a boat, take him with you wherever possible when it comes to boat-shopping. No magazine, book, or website can stand up to a person acting as your sidekick :) while shopping for a boat!
