I have found out throughout the years that it is very important to construct a plan before you arrive at your location of your next walleye fishing trip Especially if you plan to fish walleye live baits in the summer. Here are a few suggestions that I always use on all my fishing trips.

#1 Pick up a topographical map of the area you plan to fish.

Circle all weed bed areas on your map that have adjacent depth changes of more then a foot. When the weather is right and there is a wave chop, these areas are gold mine for walleye fishing.

#2 Contact a local bait shop.

A key question to ask , is “What is the best live bait choice if I am going to be walleye fishing? Make sure you specify to the bait dealer the time of year you will be fishing. It is surprising to me how many walleye anglers bypass this simple very important step.

#3 Attach shinny spinner blades and rattles to your live bait walleye fishing rigs.

For added attraction, you can add shinny spinner blades and line rattles. Walleyes are attracted to flashes and they can hear the rattle vibrating in the water.

# 4 Suggested live baits for walleye fishing:

As a rule of thumb, the norm suggested live bait for summer walleye fishing is either night crawlers or ribbon leaches. Your conversation on a local fishing chat room or from a local bait dealer may change the norm. They may know some specific tips to fish the local area that may be different from the norm. In the spring the norm usually is walleye minnows. Depending on the time you plan to fish the area minnows that are caught from the local waters still may be a viable live bait option in the summer months also.

#5 Weather conditions:

5a When you get out on the water and the sun is heavy, and there is no wave action head for the weed beds. Go deep into the weed beds to find open pockets. You still need to be quiet as you approach so use a paddle or you can use one of your boat oar as a paddle. Make sure your walleye fishing rig is spooled with at least 12 lb test line and use at least a 1/4oz jig chartreuse in color if the water is stained with a chartreuse curly tail tipped with a ribbon leach or night crawler. Vertical jig the open holes in the weed beds.

5b If there are waves then head directly to the weed bed areas you circled on your topographical map. Back troll or drift parallel to the weed bed so your bait drifts within 5ft of the edge of the weed beds. Use a bottom bouncing rig here. Make sure you attach spinner blades and a line rattle approximately 12 inches above your bait. These area’s can be walleye fishing honey holes if the weather is right.

There are many different guides to fly fishing knots, whether in books, blogs, websites or even asking more experienced fly fishermen for explanation and tips.  Fly fishing knot tying is an important part of the fly fishing process since it is what prepares the line so that the fly fisherman gets the cast and fly movement that he wants when in the water.  If these fly fishing knots are not tied properly, then they can come loose while on the water or even cause the line to snap when a fish is on the line.

Types of Knots

Fly fishing knot tying requires the fly fishermen to know at least five types of knots, depending on their preference on the different sections of line and what type of fish they are going after that particular trip.  Fly fishing knot tying also requires that some basic knot tying tips be followed so that the knots are as secure as possible, not matter what type they are.  One tip is that the fly fisherman always moistens the knot before tightening it, and that he pulls evenly on the line to tighten it rather than jerking it.  In addition, he should always test the line and older fly fishing knots so that he can determine if the line is frayed or the knots need to be retied.  This will help to ensure that the line and knots will hold not matter how big the fish is.  Fly fishing knot tying also requires the ends of the line be clipped close to the knot so that there are not any ends that could cause hang-ups or distractions.

There are five different types of knots that fly fishing knot tying requires the fishermen to know.  The one preferred to tie on the fly to the end of the tippet is usually the Improved Clinch Knot, although others could be used as well.  The Double Surgeon's knot is usually used in fly fishing knot tying to tie the tippet to the leader, which affects the way the fly moves in the water.The Nail knot is normally used to connect the leader to the fly line, although sometimes a loop to loop connection is needed if both lines already have a loop.The Albright knot is used to attach the fly line to the backing and is important because the fly line is expensive to replace.Finally, the Arbor knot is used in fly fishing knot tying to secure the backing to the spool.

Planer boards work great for suspended walleye or when the walleye are schooled very close to shore. The key to using planer boards is to get your bait as far away from the boat as possible. Do not get the idea that to be a successful walleye fisherman that you need to fish with planner boards, that is not the case you can be very successful without them. When running boards, a very important thing to consider is the stability of your boards. One of the most common questions about using planerboards for walleye is “how far back should your walleye bait and your weight be from the planer board? This is an excellent question but there is no definite answer because it will depend on how active the walleye are on any given day. if the walleyes are very aggressive and they are attacking your walleye baits then keep your baits closer to the boards,as close as 15ft. On days when they're more finicky it is important to position the weight much further away from the lure. When you start out for the day, try going 40 feet back from the planer board with your weight and about 40 feet back from your weight with the lure. This will make adjustments easy, and you'll be starting at a good mid-point.

Here is another common question: “what kind of walleye fishing equipment will I need to get started fishing with planerboards?” A good basic planer board equipment package would consist of (2) planerbaords, (2) rod holders, (2) sets of snap weights, and (2) Walleye fishing trolling rod and reel combos. It is a real plus if the reels have line counters included. The line test should be 10 to 12 lbs.

Night fishing can be a very rewarding way to spend a weekend evening out on the water away from any crowds or fishing pressure. Many record walleye, crappie, bass and catfish have been caught while night fishing. Amazingly not many fisherman take advantage of the opportunity to go night fishing and probably for good reason… They don’t know how! Fishing at night can be very rewarding but there are some night fishing tips and guidelines you must adhere to fish for your favorite species such aswalleye. My article today is about some important night fishing equipment that you need to have on every night fishing trip, to be successful and SAFE!

#1 Underwater fishing lights.

Don’t go cheap when you look at underwater light sources, you need a good florescent light that generates a minimum of 25-40watts of power, and that will emit 1000 to 3000 lumens per tube.It is amazing how much plankton these lights will attract. These little organisms are the primary food source of most of the small bait fish that game such as bass love to attack. Bait fish are the main ingredient that is needed to have a successful night fishing trip. These lights absolutely are useful in attracting game fish such as walleye to your night fishing location. When you have a swarm or ball of bait fish surrounding your underwater fishing light anything can happen.You just drop your lines a the outer edges of the light source and you are in business! And what is great I have caught crappie while I was fishing for catfish at night, I have caught catfish while I was targeting walleye’s at night, and believe it or not I have caught many bass while fishing at night!And it is my opinion I could of caught very few of these fish without a good underwater fishing light source.

#2 Surface night fishing lights.

Surface lighting is very important not only for fishing but for your safety. I want to identify two primary areas that surface lighting will help you. As I stated above you need to be safe out on the water. Surface lighting will identify you to other night fisherman and recreational boaters. There are not many out at night but enough to cause watercraft accidents. MOST of these accidents are form improper surface lighting. The second reason is very important too. The light source will pro-ject across the surface and attract insects, yes I said attract insects! Insects attract bait fish and bait fish attract mare game fish! Just make sure you hang these lights outside of your boat so you keep most of the insects away from you. If you use a Coleman type lantern for night fishing make sure you shield the side facing into the boat so the light reflect back out and across the water. This limit the amount of insects that will attack you in the boat.

#3 Pre-Planning is important! Before you decide to go night fishing it is very important to do some preplanning. Make a check list of all the items that will be essential after nightfall. Also get out and scout the areas you want to night fish for the evening. If you have a GPS to mark them that would be great. If you do not have a GPS identify land marks that you will be able to identify after night fall.

Fishing for bass can provide some of the most exciting fly fishing in the country. More people probably fish for largemouth bass than any other species. The widespread availability of bass make it very popular for sport fishing. Largemouth bass can be found from southern Canada to South America. Fly fishing for smallmouth bass is also exciting but since they prefer cooler water they are not as widespread as largemouth.

Generally, the warmer the water, the larger the bass will grow. In southern states, fish of 10 pounds or more are not unusual while in colder nothern states a five pound fish will be considered large. The temperature of the water is a key factor in the food available for bass to eat.

The best time to fish for bass is usually just after the bass have spawned. This will also depend on water temperatures. For largemouth bass, spawning takes place when the water temperatures reached the low to mid-60s. In Minnesota for example, a female bass may not deposit her eggs until mid-June, while in Florida the female bass may spawn as early as February.

The behavior of the largemouth bass is also influenced considerably by the  temperature at the top of the water. On hot summer days, they usually feed during the early morning hours and then again during the last few hours of daylight, when the sun isn't as bright and the water temperature is cooler. Bass are generally found in areas of the water that have a lot of vegetation and cover. They spend a lot of time near the water's edge among the grasses, reeds, and other plants.

Many fly fishermen use bass bugs and poppers when fishing for largemouth bass. Poppers were designed as a surface lure to be skipped across the top of the water in a series of quick retrieves. Other good fly patterns for largemouth bass or the Muddler Minnow and the Wooly Worm. There are some fly fishermen that prefer to use streamers and bucktail.

You use different fly fishing techniques for bass than for trout. Poppers are worked not only for their appearance but also for their sound. Generally, when a fly is cast for bass it should be allowed to remain unmoving for a longer period of time than for trout. Over half of bass strikes are made when the fly is stationary. Bass tend to inspect your fly for some time before making the decision whether to take it or not.

At times, fly fishermen like to tease the bass with repeated casts over the area where they think he's hiding. Teasing can sometimes be a very effective method in bringing a lazy fish up for a strike when nothing else seems to work.
