What discourages most would-be boat owners is going to boat shows and looking at the prices of the new boats. What they must realise that boat shows invariably display large capacity boats loaded with extras, which, while they give you all the comforts of home, will be a cut deep inroads into a cruising budget.

In order to get the picture, visit a local camping ground. There you will certainly see some Winnebagos and other big rigs, but the vast majority of caravans will be simple one-axle ones, mostly occupied by just a travelling couple.

It's the same with boats. Believe it or not, the average length of yachts doing world cruises is around 30 feet, and a lot of them are being sailed by just one couple. Once you get the 30 feet mindset, you will find that prices will almost certainly accommodate your limited budget. In my local market of Australia there are plenty of boats available for under $30,000, and some under $20,000, if you drop down to a 28 foot yacht.

Are you looking at second hand / used vessel?
Given that the average boater only gets out on the water about once a month it is likely that many of the pre-owned yachts for sale on the market will be in pretty good condition. A very wise option is to have a professional assessor thoroughly look over a potential yacht for you. A qualified assessor can help identify if any structural damage is due to wear and tear or likely to impact the performance of the boat, if other obvious repairs have been done correctly and by quality repairers and not quickly covered up, what the condition of the hull is like, if there is any internal / external rust that needs attention, and if the boat has durable and robust ropes and rigging.

I noticed that there was one plug "extra" but I couldn't find another drain hole so we launched. We got on board and I fired up the engine. We backed out into the canal and I idled out past the no wake zone.

I then punched it to get the boat on top of the water to plane. But, the boat was acting sluggish and the stern was not getting on top but was actually acting heavy. I slowed down the engine and walked around the inside of the boat.

In boats 30 feet and under, you should plan on there only being enough accommodation for two adults, or perhaps two adults and a couple of kids, regardless of how many berths there are. Because a boat has limited space, any extra berths will be very small, and will probably be next to the toilet - not a very hospitable place to put your guests!

So, lower your sights and expectations, forget the fifty foot plastic fantastics - you couldn't afford the annual associated costs, let alone the boat itself. Do your searching for a boat with a lesser mind set, find the one that meets your budget, pull out your checkbook and get out there
