Boating gifts are GREAT to be able to buy for people. If someone you know is a regular recipient of gifts from you and isn’t into boating, perhaps you should start by buying him a boat!
It’s not all about tackle and beer; although if you know anything about boating – or drinking – those are great boating gifts too. (Just ensure that the boat is safely and securely moored before any bottles or cans are opened.) There are gadgets to die for; accessories galore. There are fashion and clothing accessories and for those who don’t like to take too much water with it, there are hobby items like model boat building, books and collectables.

Boating Gifts ‘A La Aqua’:
For boating gifts that actually apply to sailing, there are nautical gifts like boat barometers and clocks, electronic weather instruments, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), fish finders, cameras, watches; and on the less expensive scale, items like trailer hitch covers, seat covers and fishing gear from lures to tackle boxes.

Boating apparel is a great favourite when buying boating gifts. There’s men’s clothing, women’s clothing, children’s clothing and pets’ clothing. There are wetsuits and boating gloves; tote bags and jackets, sunglasses and caps. And shoes and … and … where’s my credit card? (On the subject of pets’ apparel, don’t forget lifejackets for pets.) Water sports are also a great idea for boating gifts. There are wakeboards and kneeboards, water skis and snorkelling gear. Let’s not forget those towables, like the Hot Dog 3-Man Tube, the slide tube or the “Blast” tow tube - and varieties on the theme. Remember the galley, when you’re thinking about boating gifts – even if there isn’t one. With or without, there’s always a call for barbeque gear, warmers and coolers, tongs and accessories.

Boating Gifts ‘A La Dry Dock’:
Away from the luring water’s edge, there are the allied hobbies. Model boat building generates an endless source of boating gifts. Other collectables like flags, badges or memorabilia are great as well. Stationery items may be another option - postcards and greeting cards, posters and paintings, books and puzzles; not to mention bumper stickers! One of the easiest places to source these hobby gifts is probably online. There’s a huge variety on the Internet. On or off the water, there’s fashion, fashion and more fashion! If all this gets to be a little confusing, don’t forget that good old standby – the gift certificate! Boating gifts are fun to buy and great to receive. Get your boating T-shirt too - and get in on the action!

When out on the water it is imperative that you practice safe boating at all times. For long time boaters most of the basics of safe boating are deeply ingrained, but to those of us who are new to boating safe boating procedures may kind of foreign. There are however a few simple things you can do right away that will make boating a lot safer for you and anyone on your craft.

A Few Simple Things To Ensure Safe Boating
The most important thing to do when trying to ensure safe boating is to be absolutely sure that everyone on board has a life vest. Almost all boating deaths are preventable and the biggest cause of death is drowning. Most of this could be avoided if people simply practiced safe boating and wore life vests at all times.

The next thing is to be sure that the person driving the boat is not drinking. You would be amazed at how many accidents could be prevented if alcohol was not a factor. Very often people get out and the water, want to relax and have a few drinks. This is where trouble comes in as while a few is ok it is very hard to tell once you have had too many.

The next thing to do is always make sure to look over your shoulder when turning. Wave runners and other small craft can sneak up on you out of nowhere so be prepared by looking around before you make any kind of move. Taking that extra couple seconds can be the difference between disaster and a good time.

When you are out on the water do your best to stay away from swimmers. While you may be able to see some, more then like there will be people under water and the farther you keep your distance the less likely it will be that you can hit them. Also, many times where swimmers are the water is shallow and there can be other unseen hazards.

Lastly, make sure that you have the proper equipment in case of emergency. Paddles, flotation devices, and flares are all necessary equipment to have on board any boat, regardless of how short a trip you think you will be taking.

Follow these few simple steps and you will be well on your way to enjoying your time on the water by practicing safe boating. If everyone followed the steps above then there would be far fewer accidents and deaths on the water. Hopefully you do not become a statistic.
