While walking down the lane, if you get to pass by a park or play area, you will find a number of individuals involved in numerous activity. Some can be seen busy in a cycle race, a group using baseball equipment, while a person is busy giving baseball instruction to the seemingly new ones. Almost everyone is busy in some sort of activity. It is pretty obvious that the young ones are more overwhelmed by physical sports in spite of just resting on the grass or playing board games. Yet, each person likes a different sort of sports. When we think of classifying the sports into groups, the number of classifications is enormous. From bat and ball, sports to motor sports, from boarding sports to cue sports, from water sports to sky diving, there are just too many.

Classifying a number of sports in definite groups is definitely a tough task. But in the ball park, we can try to come up with few criteria that can put a sport in the closest possible category. Using these criteria, the groups that have been formed are as follows,

• Racing Sports: In racing sports, there are several competitors racing against each other and sometimes also in teams. The major aim of a race is to be the fastest and first one to reach the goal. Racing sports can be subcategorized in to three kinds of sports; human powered sports such as running and swimming, Human assisted such as cycling and rowing and External powered like auto sports and boating.

• Opponent sports: Opponent sports are generally a competition between two opponents where the scores achieved by the players decides the winner. These kind of sports can also be divided into three main categories Court sports are the ones that are organized in a court such as tennis, badminton and squash. Combat sports are one on one physical combats between the opponent for e.g. Karate and boxing. And the Team sports are those which teams compete with other teams example football and cricket. It can be possible that a game belonging to court sports is also a team sport.

• Achievement sports: Achievement sports can be taken as the ones in which the players show off their abilities. The categories might help you understand it more clearly. There are three kinds of achievement sports; Target sports are the ones in which the aim is to acieve or hit a target e.g. shooting and archery. Display sports are the ones in which the players exhibit certain ability or moves like in bodybuilding, gymnastics and diving. In strength sports, the competitors show off their strength as in weight lifting and triple jump.

• Athletics: Finally, there are athletics in which the competitors have to show their aptitude in a serie of various sports from above defined categories. We can roughly categorize these into running, jumping and throwing. The players have to take part in in a chain of different games and the participants with highest overall points is the winner.

This was only a rough classification of sports, if you go into further details of all these categories. Although, if you study each classes seprately, you will find that they can still be sub categorized into many other categories as well.
